Dragons of Newport Business Club - Every Wednesday

Event Chosen Charity

Dementia Friends, An Alzheimer's Society initiative

Dragons of Newport are pleased to announce Dementia Friendly Community as the chosen charity for our next open networking event on 5th December 2018.

Dementia Friends

We are all living longer and cannot complain about an ageing population!  However, with an ageing population, will come different opportunities and different challenges.  Dementia is a major concern with 1 in 14 people over 65 years of age reported to be living with dementia and in Wales there are 45,000 people living with dementia, but this is set to increase to 100,000 by 2055.

To increase the level of support for people living with dementia the Alzheimer’s Society has developed a ‘Dementia Friendly Community’ kite mark and a ‘Dementia Friends’ awareness session to help improve people’s understanding of dementia; and it only takes 45 minutes to be become a dementia friend and find out more information about dementia.

People living with dementia still want to live an active life and continue to do the things that are important to them: shopping, ensuring their financial and business affairs are in order, visiting restaurants and tourist attractions.  For businesses there is an opportunity to continue to support their customers and even reach out to new customers by adopting a dementia friendly approach.  A number of businesses will also employ staff who may take on a caring role for loved ones and an increased understanding of dementia will help support staff.  Everybody will be touched by dementia at some point - if it is not immediate family, it will be extended family, friends or neighbours – so why not increase your knowledge of dementia so that you and your business can better support people living with dementia.
